Safety Tips to Avoid Theft

Whether your car is parked at the store or in your driveway, it can be at risk for theft. There are ways you can make your car less appealing and more of a challenge to potential car thieves if they see it when looking around.

Here are a few safety tips recommended by the National Insurance Crime Bureau and car insurance companies:

Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even while driving.

When parked, close all the windows and sunroof.

Never leave your car running and unattended.

When you park in a parking lot - Park in a well-lit areas with a lot of foot traffic, for example at the end of a row and near a light. Do not leave spare keys outside of the car as most thieves know where they are typically hidden.

Do not keep valuable, such as purses, wallets, electronics in your car.

If possible, do not stay parked in one spot too long.

Have visible devices and audible alarms -

While the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) can easily be removed by a thief, if you have your VIN etched into your windows it makes it harder for your car to be taken to a chop shop.

A steering wheel lock is very visible and will deter some thieves.

Have immobilizing devices or anti-theft systems - Install a anti-theft system in your vehicle if it does not have one. Thieves are reluctant to steal vehicles if they know the cars can be recovered quickly. Many insurers offer discounts for anti-theft systems as well. Immobilizing devices will shut off your vehicle's electrical or fuel supply. The thief would not be able to drive your car away unless they found a key or knows where the hidden switch is located.

Always remember: Be observant of your surrounding, such as suspicious people and other vehicles. If you catch a thief in the act, do not approach the person but call 911 immediately. Your safety is more important than the car.
